πŸ„ Animal Husbandry

TJAPS Krishi Bikash Shilpa Kendra has been actively involved in Animal Husbandry projects in the state of West Bengal since 1991-92. Animal Husbandry is a state subject, with primary responsibility resting with the State Government. However, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries under the Central Government operates 30 Central Livestock Organizations and allied institutions to supply superior germplasm for crossbreeding and genetic upgradation.

TJAPS K.B.S.K. contributes by implementing and promoting the following:

  • Genetic Upgradation: Through Central Cattle Development Programs

  • Poultry and Piggery Development

  • Sheep Farming Initiatives

  • Fodder Cultivation Projects

  • Livestock Health & Veterinary Services

Our efforts support the infrastructure and technical development required for rapid growth of the animal husbandry sector.


πŸ₯› Dairy Development

Since 1991-92, K.B.S.K. has played a key role in enhancing India’s dairy sector. During the 8th Five-Year Plan, milk production exceeded 69 million tonnes, growing to 81 million tonnes in 2000-2001, and was projected to reach 85 million tonnes in 2001-2002, making India the largest milk producer globally.

Our dairy programs focus on:

  • Supporting dairy cooperatives in non-Operation Flood areas

  • Revitalizing sick dairy federations

  • Establishing quality testing infrastructure

  • Promoting integrated dairy development models

K.B.S.K. was an active contributor to Operation Flood, with its third phase concluding in 1996. The program’s main goal was to strengthen dairy cooperatives and ensure sustainable growth of the dairy industry, especially for rural income generation.


🐟 Fisheries

K.B.S.K. has been engaged in fisheries development since 1991-92, recognizing it as a vital sector for employment, nutrition, and economic growth. Fisheries generate foreign exchange and provide affordable protein-rich food, particularly benefiting economically backward communities.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Freshwater & Marine Aquaculture

  • Shrimp Farming Support

  • Fishing Infrastructure (harbours, landing centres)

  • Post-harvest Handling & Processing

  • Fishermen Welfare & Training Programs

Achievements:

  • India is the 2nd largest producer of freshwater fish and 3rd in total fish production globally

  • K.B.S.K. contributed to 63.64 lakh tonnes of fish production in 2002-03

  • 429 Fish Farmers Development Agencies (FFDAs) and 39 Brackishwater Fish Farmers Development Agencies (BFDAs) support rural fishers

  • Infrastructure includes 6 major fishing harbours, 40 minor harbours, and 151 fish landing centres under central schemes

🚰 Department of Drinking Water Supply

K.B.S.K. has been actively working with the Department of Drinking Water Supply (DDWS) since 1991-92. This department, under the Ministry of Rural Development, provides scientific, technical, and financial support for improving water and sanitation across rural India.

Key Initiatives:

  • Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) – launched in 1972-73

  • Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission (RGNDWM) – mission approach adopted in 1986

  • Sector Reform Project and Swajaldhara Scheme – promoting community-led water management

  • Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) – launched in 1999 with a people-centric approach

Our focus remains on delivering safe drinking water and sanitation solutions to rural communities, with a special emphasis on sustainability, equity, and community participation.


🌾 Land Reforms Monitoring Information System (LRMIS)

K.B.S.K. has been working in the Land Reforms sector since 1991-92, aiding the Department of Land Resources in implementing centrally sponsored land governance schemes.

Objectives:

  • Digitization and modernization of land records

  • Enhancing transparency and access to land-related services

  • Monitoring the effective implementation of land reform initiatives

Through the Land Reforms Information System (LRIS), we contribute to better governance, accountability, and improved land rights for marginalized communities.

πŸŽ“ Education & Youth Empowerment

Education is the foundation of empowerment. Since its inception, Krishi Bikash Shilpa Kendra has emphasized access to quality education and skill development for rural and tribal youth.

Our Initiatives Include:

  • Running coaching centers and informal education hubs

  • Vocational training programs for rural youth in farming, animal care, carpentry, tailoring, and small enterprise

  • Digital literacy and ICT training

  • Scholarship support and educational outreach in backward regions

These programs aim to empower youth with tools for self-reliance, employment, and leadership in their communities.

Health is central to sustainable development. K.B.S.K. has undertaken multiple health initiatives in underserved areas since 1991-92, focusing on preventive care, health education, and medical outreach.

Key Interventions:

  • Organizing free medical camps and mobile health units

  • Awareness drives on nutrition, hygiene, maternal & child care

  • Distribution of basic medicines, sanitation kits, and mosquito nets

  • Collaboration with local PHCs and private practitioners for community health services

These efforts are directed at ensuring a healthier, more aware rural population, reducing disease burden and increasing productivity.
